Opening the way to a new course in your life.
This is where you open the door to your career in Massage Therapy. The Certificate of Massage Therapy is the basic qualification you need to be recognized as a professional Massage Therapist.
We will give you the opportunity to gain the skills you will need to work as a Massage Therapist by teaching you practical massage skills, human anatomy, pathology and first aid, plus practice management subjects.
You choose from three Certificate courses: the two entry level qualifications, Certificate of Massage Therapy (Sports) and Certificate of Massage Therapy (Relaxation) plus the Certificate of Massage Therapy (Oriental) which you can take as a second Certificate.
Sports Massage (First qualification)
You will find Graduates with this Certificate working in all kinds of sports situations, helping athletes ranging from the elite to local youngsters, perform at their best, minimise injury or recover from injury. They play key roles in organizations ranging from sports medicine clinics to local gyms. The professionals who teach you in this stream routinely apply their skills at the highest levels of international competition and in top-level multi-disciplinary sports medicine teams.
Our sports massage teaching staff have national and international experience including team masseurs at the Olympics, Australian Tennis Open, World University Games and various other elite sporting competition.
Relaxation Massage (First qualification)
The increasing pace and stress of today's life means more people are seeking out Graduates with this speciality for their skills in calming, nurturing and healing. Relaxation is something of a signature for massage -everyone thinks of it first (the quick neck rub) and it is one of the oldest uses of massage. It is particularly attractive to many people because of its non-invasive, gentle, totally natural approach. The special massage techniques you will learn are designed to stimulate the body's own defences against the ravages of stress. Also included is "seated" massage techniques to use in the dynamic growth area of the corporate massage industry.
Oriental Massage (Second certificate)
Oriental Massage is based on the Chinese tradition. It is related to acupuncture, uses special pressure points, and you will use it to promote health and vitality, and to remedy a range of ailments for the trunk and extremities as well as internal complaints.
Note that the Certificate of Massage Therapy (Oriental) is offered only as a second Certificate extending the qualifications, knowledge and skills of a holder of one of the other two Certificates.
Study Modes
The course may be taken either full time over four months or part-time over ten months.
Full time study is attending a Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am until 4.30pm
Part time study is two evenings per week from 6.30pm until 9.30pm
There are two intakes a year - in March and in August
Students studying full time are eligible to apply for Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Support benefits.
Further study
Graduates of the Certificate course may proceed to:
- A second Certificate.
- The Diploma of Health Science (Massage).
In addition, Certificate graduates commonly undertake continuing study in non-award short courses, workshops and seminars to maintain and develop their knowledge and skills.
